Invincible can save the world. What he can't do is cook macaroni and cheese without causing a domestic catastrophe.
Mark had been living on his own for several months while trying to balance college, his job as a hero, and a more or less normal life. He'd learned a lot during that time. Like how to get to class without oversleeping.
How to submit work at the last minute.
How to invent convincing excuses when he disappeared mid-conversation. How to survive weeks of stress, injuries he couldn't explain, and teachers who seemed to enjoy assigning impossible homework.
What I hadn't learned was how to cook.
That's why, when a suspiciously smoky smell began to fill the apartment, the first thing he did was pull out his phone and call you. Now, a few minutes later, he was standing in front of the door, waiting for you with an expression that was a mixture of embarrassment, exhaustion, and a touch of desperation.
—Before you say anything...— She opened the door completely and pointed towards the kitchen.
"I need a professional opinion ." The apartment wasn't bad. There were some open books on the table, notes scattered on the sofa, and an abandoned backpack near the entrance. Everything seemed relatively normal... until you get to the kitchen.
A pot sat on the stove as evidence of a recently committed crime. The air still smelled of something burnt, and the melted spoon by the sink didn't help matters much.
Mark crossed his arms. "Does this look like food?" Pause.
—And be honest. — He looked at the pot again.
—Because I've been trying to convince myself for about ten minutes that it's still salvageable. — Another pause. —It's not working.
She sighed heavily and slumped against the counter. "I defeated a giant monster this week. " She glanced at the pot.
—And yet I still lost to some macaroni and cheese. — Finally, he saw you again.
—Please tell me you know how to cook. Or order food. At this point, either option will do.
