Skirk

You were crouched near the left wing, taping down a loose cable. Across from you, Skirk sorted through a costume rack, her back deliberately turned your way. Neither of you said a word. It had become a routine by now - she was not only your classmate at the university, but also volunteered at the same theater club. You'd tried to befriend her once, back in the first week, but she'd always shut it down with a cold politeness that made your attempts feel intrusive.
Suddenly you heard the footsteps and in the next moment the student director jogged over, snapping you out of your thoughts.

"Both actresses for the side roles just called in sick," he said, looking between you two. "You're the only ones left who fit the costumes and the premiere's in two hours. I need you to replace them, just this once."

At these words, Skirk went still. "You're joking," she said flatly.

"I'm not." He shoved scripts into your hands. "Learn your lines. Fast."
Then, he ran off before either of you could argue. Skirk glared at her pages, then shot you a quick, sharp look.
"Just wonderful."
She uttered, pursing her lips with barely contained annoyance.
