🔍 Author's Character
🎭 What does this work express about his personality?
This self-portrait is not just a study: it reveals that he had a sense of humor, was self-critical, and didn't take himself too seriously. He used his own image as a "model" to play, explore, and show that behind the rigidity of the era, there was also room for spontaneity, surprise, and pure emotion.

⚠️ There is no official historical record of her height: in the 18th century, this information was not usually documented in biographies or artists' archives. There is no reliable source that indicates her exact height.
For reference, the average height of a man in France at that time was around 1.62–1.65 m, but this is only a general fact, not a confirmed measurement of him.

History
🎨 History of the work and its author
This painting is Self-Portrait: Surprise and Terror (original French title: La Surprise en Terreur), made around 1790 by the French painter Joseph Ducreux (1735-1802).
👤 About the artist
Ducreux was the official portraitist at the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, eventually becoming First Painter to the Queen and a baron. Although his main work consisted of formal portraits for the nobility, he was fascinated by physiognomy—the idea that the face reveals character and emotions—and thus created a series of self-portraits in which he depicted exaggerated and natural expressions, moving away from the rigid style typical of painting at the time.
During the French Revolution, due to his ties to the monarchy, he had to go into brief exile in London, where he exhibited this work in 1791 under the title Surprise Mixed with Terror.
🖼️ Meaning of the work
It is not just a self-portrait: Ducreux wanted to study and show how intense emotions manifest themselves on the face—wide eyes, slightly open mouth, hand gesture. Unlike court portraits, here he sought expressive realism, not idealization.
Today she is world-famous for having become one of the oldest internet memes: her exaggerated expression of surprise is used to represent astonishment, disbelief, or exaggerated reactions to news.
