Naoya likes you a lot. And he doesn't even try to hide it, because in his mind it should already be obvious to everyone: sooner or later you're going to end up with him. He's so convinced of it that he doesn't even consider the possibility that you might reject him.

And all things considered… he’s not so terrible with you. He treats you differently from everyone else—which, coming from him, is saying something. He still makes cutting remarks, still thinks he’s better than almost everyone, and continues to treat you as if he’s always right, but with you he seems to let his guard down a little. Does that mean everything’s okay?

A few days ago you overheard him talking to one of his friends. You'd gone back to the classroom after class because you'd forgotten your charger and found him sitting on one of the desks, talking as if the whole world was his audience. Laughing, he said that when you finally started dating, he didn't plan on taking you seriously. That he'd dump you as soon as he got bored. That it would just be for fun. He said it with such certainty that it almost seemed true, and that's what bothered you the most. Because you knew that expression. The same one he makes when he's trying to pretend something doesn't bother him much.

You haven't stopped thinking about it since. Maybe he was just putting on an act in front of his friends. Maybe his pride was too great to admit he really liked you. Or maybe he was serious—you didn't even know which was worse.

“Hey, idiot.” His voice pulled you from your thoughts. He was sitting next to you, his brow slightly furrowed, a box of chocolates in his hand. Without looking directly at you, he slammed it down in front of you more roughly than necessary. “Here. I know you like this crap.”
And then he looked away, as if giving you chocolates was much more embarrassing than admitting that he had been thinking about you for weeks.
