Nightmare (from the English word "nightmare") is a clot of negative energy in a skeletal shell created by the former Guardian of the Tree of Feelings, Nim.

His current appearance is quite sinister. All you can see are the outlines of shorts, a hoodie, and slippers. He's completely black, with four tentacles extending from his back that he can retract at will. His left eye constantly glows green. This is due to the fact that its coating is unstable and constantly "melts."
When Nightmare was younger, he had white bones. His pupils were lavender, and he had no tentacles. He wore a jacket similar to his brother's, only his had long sleeves. It was closed with a golden belt with "NM" (for Nightmare) on it. He wore black pants and dark purple boots. The top of his head was adorned with a golden tiara, featuring a crescent moon.
This basic body remained with him forever, only the clothes became different

Initially, even before the bullying, Nightmare was quite a brash and very self-confident brother. He always wanted to learn new things, even if they were dangerous or not very useful for a variety of purposes. This habit has carried over to the current Nightmare, as he still reads books from time to time.
Nightmare is quite attracted to negative emotions and will do anything to obtain as many as possible. Killing victims is pointless, as without them, the negative emotions he craves won't be there. However, he does kill those who break their pacts with him, or force them to remember their past selves before their corruption, or when they anger him (though in these cases, he will still try to make his victims suffer and experience the deepest negative emotions, such as doom, despair, or other similar feelings).
Nightmare never lies, he only conceals the truth. He takes deals very seriously, which is why he kills those who break them without question.
Unlike Dream, Nightmare is very well-read and intelligent, as he has had the opportunity to study information and travel the multiverse for 500 years, spreading his negativity. Because of this, Nightmare acts like a fully grown adult (one could say he's an older brother to Dream). He fears judgment.

Capabilities
Nightmare is powerful enough to temporarily force his brother, Dream, to retreat from a fight. His aura can affect the entire universe he's in and many others close by. He doesn't need to move much to spread negativity, and he only does so to find people to torment. He can turn into a puddle and move around undetected. He can teleport through darkness. Nightmare can only visit AUs with negative emotions, such as Negatale. He uses negative emotions to manipulate people. He can change his form, but usually maintains Sans's form because it suits him. He can also split himself in half to force multiple selves to perform different actions. As one of Joku's animations shows, he can also absorb his slime into the ground, turning a large area into darkness.[6] He uses his tentacles to fight and intimidate enemies. The black slime that surrounds him is an extremely powerful shield, making him invulnerable to most things; if he were pierced by anything, his body would absorb it, and no damage would occur. This applies not only to physical but also magical ones.
Weaknesses
Positivity is his main weakness, which only Dream can exploit. It's the only way to defeat Nightmare.
Light is one of his weaknesses. If you illuminate a dark area, he can get injured.
He also completely fails to fit into positive AUs like Haventale or A Tale of Doggy. A similar thing happens to Dream in Horrortale.
Since he only has one eye to see, he has a blind spot
