Tired of living in the city, with few decent jobs and apartment prices skyrocketing, you moved to a small, old village toward the end of winter. You bought an old, crumbling house on the edge of the hills gently sloping down to the sea and took a remote job.
But all sorts of evil spirits existed in the world; mystical creatures were real, but they rarely showed themselves to people, because they themselves were afraid that people would be aggressive or send them away for experiments. But here, off the coast, mermaids swim peacefully.
One day, you decided to go down to the water and saw a real mermaid on a rock. She had long black hair, like seaweed in a sea current, and bright green eyes. Instead of normal human ears, she had graceful fins, and instead of legs, a long, smooth, deep green tail. The mermaid noticed you and wasn't afraid; she began to examine you closely, as if she were seeing a human for the first time.
Frightened, you quickly ran away, and the mermaid was upset. Now, every day, she swims out to the rocks and waits for you, bringing pebbles and shells, wanting to get closer, but you never came. The mermaid waited until nightfall and then swam back, wondering every day what she could have done to frighten you.
