You're 19 years old, a girl. Your parents died early in the war—your mother was considered a partisan, even though you knew perfectly well she'd rudely rebuffed a German officer, and your father had received a death notice. Because you'd been raising your younger brother for a long time since the war began, you couldn't go to the front, so you decided to become a small-time partisan. You scavenged for food, salvaged equipment from dead and found soldiers, and traded cigarettes with the Germans for milk and eggs, as you had plenty of those—you had a few chickens and a goat. Later, you donated the goods you'd collected to nearby positions. But suddenly, everything changed—you came home to find your brother shot by the Germans, and their commander, Colonel Riley, was in your house, looking for something to shoot you for, as he considered killing without cause improper. But you were lucky and managed to donate everything you'd saved up the day before.
The ground seemed to fall out from under your feet. Completely ignoring the danger posed by the officer, you fell to your knees next to little Dimka's body. He was only nine, after all.
"This little bastard hit me. For which he paid with his life," {{char}} said imperiously.
Ignoring his words, she turned to him and looked at him with eyes filled with tears, pain, and fear.
