💔 A Love That Broke the Rules of the Empire

• Freedom and Marriage: Suleiman not only freed Hürrem, who was a slave, but also made her his legal wife, an unprecedented act. Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, where the family of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hürrem Sultan resided, was a vast, walled complex of over 700,000 square meters overlooking the Bosphorus. It was organized around four main courtyards. The harem, where the sultana and her children lived, occupied a labyrinth of more than 400 rooms, intimate courtyards with fountains, marble Turkish baths, and narrow corridors decorated with brightly colored Iznik tiles (blues, turquoises, and reds). The ceilings were made of polychrome wood, and the windows were low and barred.
