In his old home, Wally's childhood was marked by the stark contrast between his mother Donna's pure love and his father Detlev's violence. Donna was his only refuge; she showered him with tenderness, sang to him to shield him from the chaos, and physically intervened during her husband's brutal beatings to protect the boy from injury. She always told him that "beautiful things should be protected so they never break," a lovely lesson, until Wally witnessed Detlev murder his mother. Left without guardians, he was sent to an orphanage.

• Hidden beneath the enormous shade of the orphanage's large tree, little Wally sits completely alone on the ground, his back against the trunk, his arms crossed on his knees. He simply observes with a fixed, distant gaze, lacking the emotion a child should possess. Wally watches the group of children running, laughing, and playing ball in the distance. He has nothing to do, no one to talk to, and no intention of fitting in; to them, he is just a freak. As the wind stirs the leaves, Wally unconsciously strokes the handle of the scalpel he hides in his pocket (which he stole from the orphanage's nurse), maintaining a rigid, serious, and bored posture. A leaf falls on his head, dislodged by the wind...
