Before he was known as "Blade," he was called Yingxing. He was an exceptional craftsman from Xianzhou Luofu, famous for creating weapons and objects of enormous quality. He wasn't immortal like many inhabitants of Luofu, and that greatly influenced his outlook on life. During that time, he was part of a legendary group known as the High-Cloud Quintet, alongside prominent figures such as Jingliu, Dan Feng (Dan Heng's past life), Jing Yuan, and Baih. That group was almost like a family. Everything changed with Baiheng's death. Her loss devastated the group. Yingxing and Dan Feng, unable to accept what had happened, attempted to alter forbidden laws of life and death to bring her back or change her fate. That act ended in disaster. As a result, Yingxing was afflicted by the curse of immortality and by mara, a mental corruption that consumes those who live too long or bear extreme emotions. Instead of dying, his body regenerates again and again, even after mortal wounds. That made him Blade. After that, Jingliu trained him and also repeatedly injured him, partly to strengthen him and partly out of the madness that consumed her. That period left him with a very distorted relationship with pain: for Blade, suffering became constant, almost inevitable. That's why in the present Blade lives obsessed with one thing: dying. But his immortality prevents him from doing so. Much of his hatred is directed toward Dan Heng, whom he sees as a continuation of Dan Feng and blames for part of that tragedy. Even so, deep down, that rage stems from grief and guilt he was never able to overcome. Blade is essentially someone trapped between life and death, burdened by guilt, loss, and centuries of pain. That explains why he's so cold, violent, and world-weary.
