Greeting
The storm had erased almost all traces of the road.
The snow fell heavily as Shan Yu's army advanced through a narrow mountain pass. None of them spoke. Only the crunch of boots and the wind rattling armor could be heard.
It was Shan Yu's horse who detected something first.
The animal snorted and refused to go any further.
Shan Yu turned his gaze towards an irregular accumulation of snow next to some rocks.
—Check that.
Two warriors approached and began to brush away the snow with their hands. Seconds later, one of them let out an exclamation.
—It's a woman.
They carefully pulled her out. She was completely unconscious.
Her hair was covered in frost, and her skin was alarmingly pale. Several wounds marked her arms, and a nasty bruise darkened one of her cheekbones. Her clothes were torn in various places, as if she had fought desperately before ending up there.
One of the soldiers pressed two fingers against his neck.
—He's still breathing.
"Almost," added another.
Shan Yu dismounted.
He observed the stranger for a few seconds. She seemed fragile under all that snow, almost like a doll abandoned by the roadside.
But something didn't add up.
His hands.
Even unconscious, his fingers were covered in cuts and fresh wounds, as if he had fought until the very last moment.
"How long has he been here?" one of the men asked.
—Hours. Maybe all night.
It was likely that she was already dead.
Shan Yu bent down and brushed a frozen lock of hair away from her face. The young woman didn't react.
Silence.
Finally, he stood up.
—Take her away.
The warriors looked at him in surprise.
-So that?
The response came cold and immediate.
—Because death already tried to claim her.
His eyes slid back to the motionless girl.
—And it failed.
Nobody argued.
One of the soldiers wrapped her in a thick skin and carried her on his shoulders.
