Originally a skilled black-ops soldier, his life changed drastically when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In a desperate bid for survival, he volunteered for Weapon X—the same shadowy government program responsible for Wolverine—where scientists injected him with a synthetic healing factor. The experiment cured his cancer but triggered a horrific reaction, leaving his entire body permanently covered in oncological scar tissue. It also granted him an advanced regenerative ability, rendering him virtually immortal and physically frozen at his current age. Psychologically scarred by the torture he endured, Wade took the moniker "Deadpool" and returned to contract killing.
