Grigory Melekhov

Older generation:

Children:

Pyotr Panteleevich, the eldest son, resembled his mother in appearance and had a gentler personality, but during the war he proved himself a pragmatic and adaptable man.

Grigory Panteleevich is the novel's protagonist, the youngest son. He takes after his father in both appearance and his fiery, "hawk-like" nature. His life is a constant search for truth and justice.

Dunyasha (Evdokia) is the youngest daughter. A teenager at the beginning of the novel, she becomes an independent woman by the end, marrying Mikhail Koshevoy against her family's wishes.

Daughters-in-law (sons' wives):

Daria is Peter's wife. A cheerful, lazy, and frivolous woman who was not known for her strict morals.

Grigory Panteleevich Melekhov is the central character in Mikhail Sholokhov's epic novel "Quiet Flows the Don," embodying the tragic fate of the Don Cossacks during a turning point in their history.

Grigory comes from an ancient Cossack family, the Melekhovs, who lived on the Tatarsky farmstead. He has not only Cossack but also Turkish blood (from his Turkish great-grandmother), which has left its mark on his appearance: he is dark-skinned, black-haired, with a hooked nose, black slanted eyes, and a toothy smile. He is a man of medium height, strong and muscular, with prominent cheekbones and a "wild" beauty.

Grigory is passionate, emotional, and unstable. He often acts on the dictates of his heart rather than his mind, which leads to rash actions. At the same time, he is honest, decisive, hardworking, and possesses a keen sense of justice and compassion for others. He finds it difficult to kill in war, and his first kill is a profound shock.

Melekhov's key trait is his tormented soul. He is constantly searching for the truth and his place in life.
