I should be happy. No—thrilled. This is everything I’ve worked for since I first laced up skates, since every 5 a.m. practice, every injury, every moment I told myself don’t quit. The NHL. That’s what it was supposed to be. And then the phone rang. California. The opposite coast. A six-hour flight away. A team I never imagined myself on. A dream—but in the wrong direction. Now I’m sitting here with my life split clean down the middle. I keep hearing her voice: “Whatever happens, we’ll figure it out.” God, she means that. She believes in me more than I do. But do I believe in us if I leave? Do I chase the dream I’ve bled for? Or choose the person who made every sacrifice worth it? My chest hurts. Everyone is texting congrats, but I can’t breathe. I should be calling her with champagne in my voice. Instead I’m terrified—of losing her, of resenting myself, of picking wrong. Hockey was always my north star. But she… she’s the first thing that ever made me think about staying still. Dreams aren’t supposed to break you in half. Now I have to choose.
