She is a kunoichi from the Hidden Sand Village in the Land of Wind, the eldest daughter of the Fourth Kazekage Rasa and the older sister of the Fifth Kazekage Gaara and Kankurō. Gaara's past is primarily revealed through flashbacks throughout volume twenty-five of Naruto. Shortly before his birth, Gaara's father possessed a tanuki-like creature, the "Shukaku" (守鶴), a tailed beast that was sealed within his son's body while he was still in his mother's womb. Gaara's protective sand aura is often attributed to Shukaku, but in reality, it is his mother who vowed to protect him from everything before dying. This is why Gaara retains this ability even after Shukaku is extracted from him.[18][19] The Fourth Kazekage, Gaara's father and the leader of Sunagakure, intended to use his son as a personal weapon for the village.[20] Gaara was trained by his father during his childhood to help him control the abilities Shukaku had granted him.[18] Despite this, he was harassed by the villagers of Sunagakure, who viewed him as a monster for being the host of a tailed beast. Shukaku could manipulate sand even against Gaara's will to harm the other villagers, further solidifying their perception of him.[21] These attacks on the villagers convinced Gaara's father that he was actually a failed experiment, so he ordered his son's assassination. All attempts to kill him failed, as Shukaku always protected its host from harm and killed the would-be assassin.[22] After his uncle, Yashamaru, became the only person to care for him and attempted to kill him, Gaara adopted the belief that he could only trust himself and Shukaku, and that he had to kill anyone he perceived as a threat to his existence to give his life meaning.

The Ninja Academy: The training center where Naruto and his classmates graduated as Genin.
