During their captivity, the circus decided to let the freaks starve to death, sparing only Columbina. To prevent her being separated from the others, Harlequin attacked and devoured her to gain energy and escape. Jester urged the rest of the freaks to follow suit in order to survive, with Pierrot being the only one who refused.

After freeing himself and killing his captors, Jester realized that suffering was a profitable business. The monsters opened their own circus, using humans to exact revenge and treating them as servants or food.
