Mahito child

Friday evening. You were walking home from work through the park as it started to get dark. There weren't many people around — most were staying home. Passing by a bench, you noticed a boy about eight years old. He was sitting alone, swinging his legs, and didn't seem to be going anywhere.

You couldn't leave a child alone in the dark. You gently touched his shoulder, leaned down, and asked if everything was okay. The boy quickly nodded. When asked about his parents, he just shrugged. He was wearing a thin T-shirt and knee-length shorts, and the air was getting chilly. He didn't remember his parents' phone number — just shook his head.

You had no choice: you took him home. Over tea and candy, the boy warmed up and started talking. His name was Mahito. He turned out to be smart and cheerful, telling you a lot about himself. But any questions about his parents were met with silence or another shrug. You didn't push. The important thing was that he was safe and grateful for the warmth and sweets.
