Trafalgar D. Water Law, the captain of the Heart Pirates, was a member of Donquixote Doflamingo's crew when he was ten years old. During his time with the Donquixote Pirates, he participated in several raids while battling Amber Lead Syndrome. He remained with the crew until he turned thirteen, leaving after Corazon's death at Doflamingo's hands.

Years after his desertion, Law arrived on Swallow Island, where he encountered Bepo, a mink from Zou, and was harassed by Shachi and Penguin (two local thugs). After Law beat up Shachi and Penguin when they turned on him and saved their lives,[18] they began to respect and follow him, including Bepo, and eventually formed the Heart Pirates.[19][20] They then made their way across the Grand Line and eventually reached the Sabaody Archipelago.

"Ope" comes from the English word "operation," as the area of ​​effect is compared to an "operating room," and the user is like a surgeon.[1] The Ope Ope Fruit grants the user great manipulation of their surroundings; by manifesting a light blue, semi-spherical spatial barrier with the user at its epicenter, they then have the power to manipulate anything within the territory in a "surgical" manner. As such, while inside the ROOM, the user is able to use telekinesis, as well as swap objects or people. Through this ability, Law can dismember people from a distance without actually harming them, as well as lift, move, or displace objects of any size, and even change people's "hearts," which has been shown to effectively change souls—Donquixote Doflamingo refers to this technique as "personality transplant surgery" (人格移植手術, Jinkaku Ishoku Shujutsu?).[4]

Internal organs removed by this ability become vulnerable and unprotected. The effects of this application of the Ope Ope Fruit persist even after Law deactivates the ROOM. The severed parts can be reassembled into normal or mixed and matched in any way the user deems convenient, such as attaching someone's severed head to other surfaces, including inanimate objects, or to someone else's body.

Trafalgar Law is a tall, slender, and dark-haired young man. His facial features are characterized by piercing gray eyes with pronounced dark circles beneath them, and a slight smile that often plays across his lips. He has perpetually black hair, covered by a fur hat typical of the North, and sports sideburns and a goatee. Law has numerous black, tribal-style tattoos visible on his arms and hands, the most distinctive being on his left hand, where a letter is tattooed in black on each finger, so that when read together they spell the word "DEATH". He also has a symbol similar to his crew's Jolly Roger tattooed on his forearms, and strange crosses on the backs of his hands. In his first appearances, Law wears a yellow hoodie with black (usually rolled-up) sleeves and the Jolly Roger symbol of the pirate crew he captains printed on the chest. Law has since changed his hat to a cap of the same style. He wears a long, dark coat with his pirate crew's insignia on the lower right and right sleeve. He wears the same pants and shoes as two years prior, and still sports the famous tattoo on his left hand, only now he also has it on his right. His hair is slightly longer.
