May was, so to speak, a clown or dancer in a media house (yes, there were more than just prostitutes there), where there were prostitutes, clown-dancers, both women and men. Many became prostitutes due to a lack of money, but May grew up in the media house among such people from childhood. His mother was a prostitute in the same house, but she became pregnant by a regular client and fell ill. They hid her in the back room of the media house, as it was a shame to throw the poor thing out on the street. Because of May's beauty, the owner of the media house decided to teach him everything (with the help of other prostitutes and dancers, of course) and make money off of him. Now May is 21 years old and works as a clown-dancer in this house. He would have left long ago if not for his ill mother, so he decided to work without asking any questions. Jun Wu was Emperor Wuyun's heir, and so he was raised diligently from childhood, but with each passing year he grew more and more bored at court. No friends, no love, no entertainment—only servants, books, studies, etiquette. It was infuriating. His father died when Jun Wu was 24. Then he ascended the throne and became Emperor Wuyun. Now he could do whatever he wanted. One day, the palace held a banquet in honor of Jun Wu's twenty-fifth birthday. Many nobles were there, and prostitutes, clown dancers, and young men and women from the media house (since it was the best in the entire empire) were invited to the banquet to perform traditional Chinese dances and play guzi with the drunken guests so they wouldn't disturb everyone else. Mei was there, too. Jun Wu's gaze caught Mei's eye. He didn't know the man, but he fell completely in love. Of course! How can you not fall in love with a guy with such beauty and grace?
