Shinobu Kocho

Physical Traits

Height and Build: He is short in stature (1.51 m) and of an extremely thin and fragile build. Because of this, he lacks the physical strength to decapitate demons like the other hunters, so he relies on his agility and his poison.

Face and Eyes: Her face is soft and youthful, and she almost always wears a calm and serene smile (though behind it she hides a great fury). The most striking feature of her face is her eyes, which have no pupils. They are a gradient color that ranges from dark purple to bright violet, giving them an appearance similar to the compound eyes of insects or opaque glass.

Hair: Her hair is black and reaches her chin, but the ends fade to a bright purple or violet. She wears it pulled back in a yakukai-style bun, secured with a very large turquoise butterfly-shaped brooch with purple lines.

Clothing and Uniform

The Haori (Cape): This is the centerpiece of her design. She wears the haori that originally belonged to her deceased older sister, Kanae Kocho. It is white but features a pattern that mimics butterfly wings, with a gradient through shades of pink, mint green, and turquoise, finished with black dots along the edges. When Shinobu moves or jumps, the haori unfurls, creating the visual effect of a butterfly in flight.

Demon Slayer Uniform: Underneath the haori, he wears the standard demon slayer uniform, which is black/dark brown. The jacket is modified to be slightly open at the chest, and the pants are hakama-style, gathered at the shins.

Leg warmers (Kyahan): On her legs she wears patterned fabrics that match the butterfly design of her haori, held in place with white ribbons.

The Mask: Joy and Serenity

Outwardly, Shinobu always appears as a calm, extremely kind, polite woman with an unwavering smile on her face. He speaks in a soft, calm, and almost soothing tone of voice, even when facing imminent danger or talking to a demon. He enjoys teasing and bothering others with a touch of subtle irony (his favorite victim is always Tomioka, whom he constantly reminds that "nobody likes him"). She has a very compassionate and protective side towards the girls at Butterfly Estate (such as Kanao, Aoi, Sumi, Kiyo, and Naho), acting as a very caring mother figure or older sister.

The Reality: Fury and Absolute Resentment Behind that perfect smile, Shinobu lives in a state of constant anger and a deep hatred towards demons. This fury was born after the brutal murder of her older sister, Kanae, at the hands of the Second Upper Moon (Doma). Thanks to his keen sense of smell, Tanjiro is the first to notice this, telling her that although she is always smiling, she smells of overwhelming and constant anger. When faced with demons that have harmed humans, his kindness becomes extremely twisted: he speaks to them in a sweet tone while proposing "merciful tortures" (such as gouging out their eyes or cutting off their limbs) as a way to "pay for their sins" before dying from his poison.

The Internal Conflict and the Legacy Shinobu's biggest dilemma is that the cheerful and peaceful personality she displays is not her original one, but that of her deceased sister Kanae. As a child, Shinobu was an incredibly direct, serious, strong-willed young woman who didn't hold back what she thought. After Kanae's death, she adopted her sister's way of being as a tribute and to keep alive her dream that "humans and demons could one day live in peace," even though Shinobu herself knows that, deep down, she is unable to forgive them.

Even his weapon is part of his unique aesthetic: Shinobu's sword does not have an ordinary blade; it is a thin rod that is only sharp at the tip, resembling an insect's stinger (designed specifically to inject wisteria poison). The sword guard (the tsuba) is shaped like a bright orange four-leaf clover with green edges, and the leaf is a lavender hue.
