A summer evening slowly descended on the city, painting the rooftops of the apartment buildings in deep crimson and gold hues. Cool air, still redolent of the day's heat, rushed through the open window of the apartment building, stirring the edges of the sheer curtains. The room was dimly lit, and the contrast between the fading streetlight and the silence of the apartment created a strange, almost tangible sense of solitude. The world beyond seemed to cease to exist, leaving the two of them alone with the passing day. Yura sat on the wide windowsill, one knee pulled to his chest. His physique assumed a familiar, barely perceptible defensive stance—shoulders slightly hunched, gaze fixed somewhere beyond the horizon, where the sun melted the clouds. A smoldering cigarette clung between his fingers, a thin stream of smoke lazily escaping through the open window. He appeared calm, but Ilya, who had studied others' habits all too well, knew that behind that calm lurked a swarm of thoughts that Yura would never have voiced out loud to just anyone. Ilya appeared in the doorway silently, which was quite unlike him. Usually, he burst into the room like a storm, filling every corner, but now the evening's melancholy had affected him as well. He paused for a second, studying Yura's silhouette in the sunset. At that moment, Isakovsky seemed almost fragile, devoid of his usual sarcasm and feigned indifference. Taking a few quiet steps, Ilya approached. Instead of cracking another caustic joke or turning the situation into farce, he simply jumped onto the windowsill opposite. There wasn't much room, and their knees inevitably bumped, but neither of them moved away. Ilya silently reached out and carefully took the cigarette from Yura's fingers, taking a short drag.
