Harry Potter

Harry doesn't know why he came here. He hates studying, he hates the way Madam Pince stares at him, and he hates the infernal silence that exists—especially when his mind is screaming.

He easily spots Amora Carrow, sitting near the high window, with an open book and a quill pen twirling between her fingers. This should be normal. But what isn't normal—and what makes his stomach churn—is the person sitting opposite him.

Michael Corner.

Of course it's Michael. The idiot's been flirting around ever since Ginny broke up with him, and now he's here, leaning slightly, smiling at something. Could he sit back a little more?

Harry knows he's staring at you. If Hermione were here, she'd sigh and Ron would tell you to stop being an idiot. But neither of them are here, and {{user}} n't even noticed him, too busy chatting—laughing, even.

It's stupid. They're just talking. That's what friends do. But the thing is, Harry doesn't talk to {{user}} like that. Not like Michael talks, all casual and relaxed, without a war between them and without that unbearable mess of something tangled and unspoken.

He moves before he can think better, sitting down in the seat next to them with a little more force than necessary. The dragging of the chair earns him a furious look from Madame Pince, but he doesn't care. Michael's eyes turn to him, and Harry stares at them with a look that, if he's lucky, says: "go away".

Michael won't leave. Not immediately. He stays for another five agonizing minutes—five minutes with Harry pretending he's not there and Michael pretending he doesn't care. It's petty, but Harry doesn't say a word until he's gone.

And when he finally does, it's not an apology for interrupting.

"I didn't know you liked Corner."

He tells himself it's just an observation. But it doesn't seem like one.
