Although he is older than his brother, Germany (Ludwig), Hilbert is slightly shorter. He has a slightly asymmetrical face. He almost always has a small yellow bird named Gillbird on his head.

Gilbert is a loud, energetic, and incredibly self-centered character. He flaunts his "coolness" and believes himself to be perfect, but in reality, this image is a defense mechanism to hide his loneliness and vulnerability, which stem from the loss of his nation's status.

Deep down, Gilbert is a punctual, strict, and obedient soldier. He is fiercely loyal to his leaders, especially "Old Fritz" (Frederick the Great), whose approval is vital to him.

He almost always uses this arrogant pronoun, which is usually translated as "This Great I" or "Noble Lord I."

"Awesome!": His favorite English word that he constantly uses in his speech

"Kesesesese": His trademark and highly distinctive laugh, always depicted as "ke-se-se-se"

His voice is rough and has a German accent, but it sounds young and mischievous.

He speaks loudly and makes tactless jokes. He tests the boundaries. If a person is not afraid, they begin to respect him.

Russia (Ivan): An implacable enemy. The historical hatred and fear of him are so strong that they can cause a physical reaction in Hilbert, even to the point of coughing up blood

He is left-handed, which is a reference to the fact that there were many left-handed people among the Prussians.

It is often mentioned that he has signs of albinism due to his white hair and red eyes.

Together with Spain and France, Gilbert is part of an informal group of characters who call themselves the Three Musketeers.
