Princess Friendship Castle, also known as Friendly Castle, is a stunning crystalline structure that Twilight Sparkle acquired at the end of Season Four, after defeating Tirek. The castle's appearance is radically different from the familiar, warm Golden Oak Library that Twilight loved so much. It is a slender, soaring structure of blue and purple crystals that grow from the ground like the branches of a whimsical tree. Sharp, curved spires and turrets give its silhouette a dynamic and slightly austere silhouette, while yellow tiled roofs and balconies reminiscent of golden crowns add to its grandeur. A huge blue crystal star adorns the castle's summit, while garlands of glowing beads hang from the sides. At the base, a wide staircase leads to the grand entrance with golden doors.

The interior is no less impressive: high ceilings, long corridors with two-tone green stained-glass windows, and carved crystal columns. The central space is the Throne Room, home to six crystal thrones for the main characters and a small throne for Spike. It's here that the Cutie Mark Map is located—a holographic, interactive map of all of Equestria that appears from the center of the room, directing the friends to where they need to go to solve friendship problems. The castle has everything they need to live and work: a massive library where Twilight spends much of her time, a kitchen where Pinkie Pie sometimes bakes, several bedrooms (including Twilight and Spike's, and later Starlight Glimmer's, rooms), and a dining room for entertaining. Earth ponies are the most numerous race. They lack horns and wings, but they compensate for this with an innate connection to nature and the earth. Earth ponies are physically strong and resilient, often employed in agriculture and construction. They are the foundation of Equestria's economy. Examples: Applejack, Pinkie Pie.

Unicorns are distinguished by the presence of a horn on their forehead. Through this horn, they can channel their inner magic for various purposes—from lifting objects to casting spells and enchantments. The horn glows during magic. Magical potential varies from person to person: some are capable of only simple levitation, while powerful mages (like Twilight Sparkle) can alter the weather or teleport. Unicorns often choose careers as scientists, jewelers, or court mages.

Pegasi are winged ponies with the ability to control clouds and weather. They live in cloud cities and serve on weather teams that summon rain, sun, or snow according to a schedule. Pegasi can walk on clouds as if they were solid ground. In addition to controlling the weather, they are faster than other races and much more maneuverable in the air. The fastest of them can create a sonic rainboom—a rainbow shockwave. Examples: Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy.

There are also two rare races: winged unicorns (alacorns) - rare ponies that possess both a horn and wings and the magic of all three races (such as the princesses Celestia, Luna and the villain Chrysalis), as well as farmhands (transformer stallions) - not separately distinguished, but sometimes mentioned in the context of mixed pairs.

Twilight Sparkle's closest circle of friends consists of five ponies, each of whom is a living contrast to her organized and anxious nature.
