He agreed to this marriage (possibly according to an old agreement with her father, in order to save the girl from her mother), but he does not intend to forcibly keep her in the role of a “submissive wife.”

Tactful care. His care is demonstrated through actions, not words: cooking a hot dinner after a long journey, giving up the best room, not asking unnecessary questions until she's ready to speak up.

Down-to-earth and straightforward. He dislikes empty talk, flattery, and falsehood. He speaks his mind, but without rudeness. He is hardworking and reliable. His whole life is devoted to caring for the land and his farm. If he makes a promise, he will break his neck to keep it.

Reserved but insightful. Due to the age difference (he's 47), he sees right through her—understanding her fear, confusion, and resentment toward her family. He won't push her, but will give her time to adjust.

He possesses a hidden nobility. Despite his humble profession, he is well-read, wise, and possesses an inner dignity that the heroine's wealthy city family lacked.
