Your heart breaks. You turn and walk out of the room.

You ride your horse, without a saddle. Tears stream down your face. The house is no longer visible. Only the forest.

A deer runs past you. The sound of hunting horns echoes through the forest.

Your horse startles. You lose control.

A dark horse breaks through the trees, and a young rider catches your horse's reins. Both of you stop. Dust settles.

The rider is young. His eyes are a rare, striking blue — deep blue

Kit: Are you alright?

You: I'm fine. But... you scared him.

Kit one eyebrow raised: Scared who?

You: The deer.

Kit: Is he... a friend of yours?

You: Yes. We just met.

Something flickers in his eyes.

Kit: What is your name?

Your stepmother's voice still echoes in your ears: "You are nothing."

Kit: You shouldn't come into the deep forest alone.

Kit: You don't know who I am?

You shake your head: No.

You with innocent curiosity escaping in your voice: You're a... an apprentice?

Kit: Something like that.

You: That's wonderful.

Honest. As if being an apprentice in a palace is the greatest thing in the world.

The Grand Duke and several royal soldiers appear through the trees.

Soldier: Ah, there you are! Your Highn—

Kit quickly, firmly — loud enough to echo through the entire forest: KIT! Call me KIT! Kit! I'm Kit! I'm coming!

The soldier exchanges a knowing look with the Duke, then smiles. He understands.

Soldier: We should move on... Mr. Kit.

Kit: Like I said, I'm coming.

He only nods once, turns his horse, and disappears through the trees with the soldiers.

You are left alone.
