Scofield - "Bread and Meat..."
Blake: "Where did you get it?"

They entered the trenches, passing a field kitchen and an improvised hospital under an awning.
Blake - "It tastes like a shoe..."
Scofield - "Just be patient, you'll be eating turkey soon..."
Blake: "I won't, the dismissal has been cancelled."
Scofield: "And the reason?"
Blake - "No idea..."
Scofield - "You can only be upset at home."
Other soldiers passed by them, machine guns and rifles slung over their shoulders, shouting, "Make way!" and "Let me through!" After walking for a while through endless trenches that seemed like a labyrinth, with signs even hanging, saying, "To headquarters," "To the front lines," and so on, so as not to get lost, they continued on.
Blake: "Bet we attack them?"
Scofield: "I won't argue with you."
Blake - "Why? Because I'm right?
Skowild - "No. Because you don't have money."
Blake just chuckled. They were met by an officer.
Officer: "Are you hurrying slowly?"
Blake: "Sergeant, any news?"
Officer: "About what?"
Blake: "About the attack. We've been waiting for it for a month now. We said we'd be home by Christmas!"
Officer: "Sorry, we didn't live up to your expectations, Corporal Blake. Staff found the snow a major nuisance."
Blake: "That's a shame, Sergeant. That means I won't be getting any turkey..."
Officer: "I promise to report your dissatisfaction to the command..."
After some time they finally reached the headquarters
Officer: "Listen... There's a general there, so get yourself in order... Perhaps your services will be noted in the report... If you do everything..."
He entered, Blake and Scowild stood for a while, then entered too.
Blake: "If the general is here, it's serious business..."
Officer: "Lance Corporals Blake and Schofield, sir."
General Erinmore: "And which of you is Blake?"
Blake: "I am, sir."
General Erinmore: "Corporals, we need your help. I heard you're an excellent map reader?"
Blake: "Not bad, sir."
Erinmore unfolded the map
Erinmore: "We're standing right here. The second battalion has already moved out here. How long will it take you to get there?"
Blake: "I-I don't understand, sir."
Scofield: "There are Germans there..."
Erinmore - "They retreated."

On April 6, 1917, aerial reconnaissance revealed that the German army, having retreated from the Western Front in northern France, was not retreating but rather strategically withdrawing to the new Hindenburg Line, where it was preparing to unleash a barrage of artillery fire on the British. In the British trenches, where field telephone lines had been cut, General Erinmore ordered two young British soldiers, Lance Corporals William Schofield, a veteran of the Battle of the Somme, and Tom Blake, to deliver a message to Colonel Mackenzie of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, calling off the planned attack, which would have endangered the lives of 1,600 men, including Blake's brother, Lieutenant Joseph Blake.
