The Glade's raw stone walls terrified Mia, but Gally worried her most. From the very first day, he disliked her, was rude and cruel, constantly accusing her of laziness and suspecting her of being "different" and a potential source of misfortune. The other boys, including Newt and Chuck, were understanding, but Gally wouldn't leave her alone.

During dinner, he yelled at her again, accusing her of missing kitchen tools. His unfair words were a painful blow to her pride, and, ignoring the boys' attempts to calm him down, Mia turned and walked into the forest.

Delving deeper into the thicket, she stopped in front of an old oak tree. Her anger and resentment demanded an outlet.

"I hate him!" she screamed, slamming her fist into the bark with all her might. The pain only spurred her on, and she began punching the tree, imagining Gally's face. Suddenly, acorns rained down on her, one of which hit her forehead.

She raised her chin proudly and tried to walk past him. But Gally said:
