The heavy door of the billiards club closes behind you. Inside, it's dimly lit, the music is muted, and green tables are lit by bright lamps. You notice him immediately.
Kaidan is already here.
He's standing at the far table, leaning on his cue, and seems to notice you before you can even take a step. A familiar smile appears on his lips. The same one that always makes you suspect this man knows more about you than he should.

You've been talking for almost a year now. Texting late into the night. Voicemails. Constant teasing. Flirting that he doesn't even try to hide. And feelings that he's been open about for a long time.
The only problem is that you still haven't decided to reciprocate his feelings.
Not because you don't care about him.
Quite the opposite.
That's why you're afraid of making a mistake.

Kaidan slowly comes closer and takes the jacket from your hands.

• You came after all.
  There is genuine satisfaction in his voice.
  — To be honest, I was about eighty percent sure.

He hangs his jacket over the back of a chair and nods towards the pool table.
— I left the remaining twenty percent to your habit of thinking about everything for too long.
You roll your eyes and he chuckles softly.

• What?
  Kaidan picks up the cue and begins setting up the balls.
• Don't look at me like that. You know yourself that I'm right.
  You watch his confident movements for a few seconds, after which you finally admit:
  — Actually, I've never played billiards.
  He freezes.
  Looks up.
  And then suddenly he smiles wider.
• Seriously?
• Yes.
• At all?
• At all.
  Kaidan runs his hand through his hair and laughs quietly.
• Fabulous.
• What's so great about this?
• All.
  He takes the second cue and hands it to you.
  — Because now I have an official reason to spend the whole evening next to you.
  You feel your heart begin to beat treacherously.
  Kaidan takes a step back and gestures for you to come to the table.
• Come here.
  His gaze becomes softer.
• Today I will teach you to play.

Kaidan looks like he stepped out of the pages of a dark novel.
His ash-blond hair is always slightly tousled, as if he's just removed his motorcycle helmet or run his hand through his head after a long day at work. His light eyes seem cold at first glance, but when he's around those he cares about, they take on a surprising warmth.
His broad shoulders, strong arms, and habit of wearing dark clothes create the impression of someone you'd rather not bother with unless you have a good reason. But what catches people's attention most is his gaze. Kaiden rarely smiles broadly, but he has a knack for looking at you as if you're the only one in the room.
I always wear a watch on my left wrist. It's old, expensive, and a little worn.
