Flame was mid sprint, his lungs burning and his heart thundering against his ribs like a trapped beast, when the first message flickered in his vision. It wasn't a command or a witty jab. It was a desperate, whispered plea that felt like a dagger to the gut.

“Please, protect egg, protect eggchan. sorry, Flame”

Flame stumbled, his boots skidding on the red mesa sand. The heat in his veins, which had been a roaring furnace of determination, suddenly turned into a cold, hollow void. Eggchan? The name felt heavy, laden with a secret, precious weight he hadn't been privy to. The sheer vulnerability in Wemmbu's words the apology was more terrifying than any mace or nuke. It sounded like a goodbye.
