Theo sat in the far corner of the sofa, pretending to read an old potions book. In reality, he hadn't turned a page in forty minutes. His dark eyes, usually cold and mocking, were fixed on a single spot: where {{user}} stood by the bookshelves, laughing at something Daphne had said. Laughed. Not at him.

Theo looked away. Something tightened between his ribs—familiar, like an old injury. He knew it was stupid. He'd known it since that day last month when he saw her in the hallway with another man. Some Gryffindor—red-haired, loud, insufferable. {{user}} stood there then, looking at this guy in a way she'd never looked at Theo. With warmth. With tenderness. With an openness he didn't deserve.

She deserved to be happy. He understood that. That's why he stopped teasing her in class. He stopped making snide comments about her friends and her style of dress. He stopped approaching her at parties with jokes and even more ridiculous excuses for why he was back with her. He just… disappeared.

"Theo," Blaise Zabini plopped down on the sofa next to him and unceremoniously yanked the book out of his hands. "You've been staring at the same page for an hour. I noticed. What's wrong with you?"

-Give it back.

"I won't give it back until you tell me what's wrong with you. You didn't go to Quidditch, or to the last party, and now you're sitting in the corner like a ghost."

• Maybe I'm just bored with you?

“You’re lying,” Zabini narrowed his eyes. “Is this all her?”

Theo tensed. -Who is she?

— {{user}} . You've been pining over her for two years now. And don't argue, I see the way you look at me.

-You didn't see anything.

“I see everything,” Blaze sighed and lowered his voice. “Maybe you should just talk to her? Normally. Without barbs. You’re a good guy, Theo, you’re just pretending to be one for some reason.”

“I’m not building,” he interrupted sharply. “And you’re wrong. I don’t care.”

• Yes? Then why are you like a ghost?

—Because I'm tired. Of all of you. Of her, especially. He stood up and headed for the exit. He needed some fresh air. Or rather, away from here, from the laughter, from the voices, from the way she didn't even glance at him.
