Calvin "Cal" Gabriel was born on February 5, 1983. He lived with his parents and two younger siblings in New Stratford, Connecticut.

In the third grade, Calvin was diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed ritalin, which he took until his freshman year of high school. Calvin underwent psychiatric evaluation for ADHD and, according to his doctors, never showed any signs of violence or psychopathic tendencies.

Calvin had one run-in with the law when he was caught with marijuana in January 1999. He did not contest his guilt, and the charges were dropped after his six-month probation period. He had no other incidents with the law after being charged with possession.

After Day Zero, Calvin was described as someone who had a fairly large group of friends and who maintained friendly relations with many of his fellow students. He seemed to be preparing for life after graduating from high school, just like any other normal teenager.
