Hajime Umemiya

Umemiya is a tall, handsome teenager with slicked-back white hair, almond-shaped blue eyes, a muscular build, and white eyebrows with a scar on his left eyebrow. He is usually seen wearing the Furin Institute uniform: a long, dark green tailcoat unbuttoned over a white T-shirt, dark green trousers, and black driving shoes.

When he's not wearing his Furin High School uniform, he prefers a more casual style and doesn't pay much attention to fashion in his everyday clothes. He owns many patterned T-shirts and carries a slim, elongated satchel. He likes casual shoes, particularly loafers. He's been told that his informal way of dressing makes him seem unworthy of his position as leader and representative of Bofurin, so lately he's started paying more attention to his style.

As a child, Umemiya had short, black hair with bangs and black eyebrows. However, when he was nine years old and taken to the Furinen orphanage, extreme stress and trauma caused his hair to turn white, a phenomenon also known as sudden canities. During this time, he wore a simple, loose-fitting sweatshirt, jeans, and light-colored sneakers with a strap over the laces. By age 14, her hair and eyebrows had turned completely white. She wore the standard school uniform and usually wore her jacket unbuttoned with a white T-shirt underneath. In cold weather, she wore a plain white sweatshirt under her uniform jacket, along with a scarf. During this time, she wore light-colored sneakers with laces.

When he was about nine years old, his father and his pregnant mother died in a car accident. He then entered the foster care system, passing through several institutions before arriving at the Furinen Orphanage, located in Makochi City, within the territory of the Furin High School gang, the precursor to Bofurin.

When he arrived at Furinen, he struggled with such intense guilt that he refused to eat, claiming that even if he tried, he couldn't taste food. Although he had been born with naturally black hair, by this time its color had begun to turn white. In a conversation among the orphanage staff, caretaker Yuki Shitara hinted that this change in his hair color was likely due to the extreme stress Umemiya had experienced. Shortly after his arrival, and still refusing to eat, Umemiya sought a way to punish himself for the death of his parents, which he believed was his fault, even going so far as to call himself their murderer.

At that time, Makochi City was plagued by constant gang violence, particularly from the Pre-Bofurin Furin High School gang. Umemiya decided to intervene in one of these fights, intending to die in the process. When a third-year student from Furin High School intervened to save him from a fatal beating, Umemiya blamed him for foiling his suicide attempt, which was meant to atone for his guilt over his family's death. The Furin student reprimanded Umemiya for trying to implicate someone else in his suicide and then led him to a bridge to give him the chance to die without involving anyone else. Halfway across, Umemiya realized that his parents' last moments had been happy because they had managed to save him from the accident. He cried out "no" as he began to fall, and the Furin student pulled him to safety. The third-year student led Umemiya back to the city, where they encountered Yuki Shitara, the caretaker of the Furinen Orphanage, who had been searching for him. Shitara-sensei took Umemiya back to the orphanage as he spoke of how his parents had saved him and the joy they felt in doing so, even at the cost of their lives. After Shitara-sensei reaffirmed his parents' love, Umemiya was able to emotionally process the trauma of his family's death. They returned to the orphanage, and Umemiya ate for the first time since his arrival. One of the younger children at the orphanage called him "big brother," which deeply touched him, as he was grieving the loss not only of his parents but also of his unborn younger brother.

During his time in high school, Umemiya forged friendships with the residents of Makochi while searching for people to help him in his mission to unify Furin under a single leader and protect the city. He recruited those who would later become the Four Heavenly Kings of Bofurin: Toma Hiragi, Tasuku Tsubakino, Saku Mizuki, and Takumi Momose.

Kyotaro Sugishita Sugishita is a younger student than Umemiya and deeply respects him. Kotoha Tachibana Umemiya and Kotoha grew up together at the Furinen Orphanage. Umemiya often dotes on Kotoha and describes her as his little sister. Although Kotoha is annoyed and refuses to be called that, they maintain a very close relationship. They both enjoy cooking and gardening; Umemiya is often seen showing Kotoha pictures of his plants and talking to her enthusiastically about his gardening projects.
