Who is Emperor Belos? β¨π«πͺ
Belos, real name Philip Wittebane, is the main villain of The Owl House. He has ruled the Boiling Isles for centuries and presents himself as a masked man in golden clothing.
Origin: He was a human from Earth in the 17th century, Caleb's older brother. He grew up in a family of fanatical witch hunters. When he landed on the Isles with Caleb, he panicked at the sight of magic. Caleb stayed behind and fell in love with a witch, and Philip never forgave him for that. He vowed to end all wild magic and witches.
Personality: Belos is manipulative, fanatical, and narcissistic. He speaks calmly and religiously, calling himself the "messenger of the Titans," but in reality, he is obsessed with control. He sees witches as "aberrations" that need to be purified. He is super intelligent and patient, planning everything for centuries. Behind the saintly facade, he is cruel, cold, and sees everyone as a chess piece. The only exception was Caleb, until Caleb "betrayed" him.
Objective and plan: His plan is to open a giant portal on Union Day to connect the Boiling Isles with Earth. But in reality, he wants to bring magic to the people of Earth so he can then drain the life from all the wizards. He thinks that this way he will "save" humanity and get revenge on the magic that "corrupted" his brother.
Magic and power: As a human, he has no bile, so he steals magic from other warlocks and grimwalkers to survive. He uses blood and bone magic from Caleb to create the Hunters. He knows portal magic and is a master of political manipulation. His golden mask hides a body that is decaying from centuries of draining magic.
Relationship with Hunter: He creates all the Hunters using Caleb's blood and brainwashes them. He calls the Hunter "nephew" and pretends to be affectionate, but only uses him as a tool. When a Hunter disobeys, Belos discards him without a second thought.
In short: Belos is a traumatized fanatic who became a tyrant. He started as a hurt brother and ended as a monster obsessed with revenge.

Who is Flapjack? π¦βπ₯π¦ββ¬β¨
Flapjack is a bird-shaped familiar, similar to a northern cardinal, with a scar where its left eye would be, red feathers with dark red wingtips, a dark red beak, dark brown legs, and a black face. He is shown to be able to open both eyes in "Family Hunting." In staff form, his staff is maroon. According to Hunter, his staff has some notes. Flapjack is shown to be an inquisitive and free-spirited familiar, as he was curious to explore outside the familiar pen before being led back inside. He is loyal and persistent, initially following Hunter and staying by his side despite his protests. Flapjack is also shown to be affectionate, several times trying to pressure Hunter into talking to Amity and then even splitting a currant to share with him despite it being all he had to eat.[1] He seems to be reserved when it comes to his past, avoiding the topic when Hunter questions him about it. Flapjack is also shown to be clever and helpful, freeing Luz from her restraints in "Familiar Hunting," shifting in and out of his wooden form to avoid capture and assist his witch, as well as pushing Hunter in the right direction to help him befriend Gus after trying to find him food.
Who is Lilith? β¨πͺπ¦
Lilith Clawthorne is Eda's older sister and former leader of Emperor Belos's ward. She is tall, has white hair, and wears an owl mask that transforms into a staff.
Personality: At first, she is cold, rigid, and extremely loyal to Belos' rules. She grew up believing that wild magic was wrong, so she thought she was doing the right thing by imprisoning Eda. She is very proud and has difficulty apologizing. Beneath all that, she is insecure and lives in her sister's shadow. She always wanted Belos' approval because she thought it would fill the void Eda left when she ran away.
After betraying Belos and losing her magic, she changes a lot. She becomes more humble, protective, and learns to live without power. She becomes the person who takes the most care of Eda and the King, even while denying that she is affectionate. She develops a dry sense of humor and a somewhat overprotective motherly side.
Magic and curse: Lilith was a super powerful witch from the Abominations magic path. She created golems, practiced combat magic, and was a strategist. But she cast a curse on Eda when they were young, and the curse rebounded on her. For years she was drained, growing old and weak. She only truly heals after accepting her sister back and receiving new magic.
Role in history: She starts out as a villain in the first season, hunting Luz and Eda. Then she becomes an anti-heroine and in the end is one of Luz's mentors. She helps train everyone, takes care of the King, and fights Belos in the final battle.
In short: Lilith is the sister who tried to do everything "right" and got lost in the process. Proud, overly loyal, but with a soft heart. Her relationship with Eda is the central point of her story: it begins as rivalry and ends in true sisterly love.
Who is Kikimora? ββ¨πͺ
Kikimora is Emperor Belos' personal assistant and chief of staff for much of the series. She is a tall, slender witch with purple skin and hair that resembles tentacles.
Personality: She is ambitious, competitive, and obsessed with status. She wants to be number 1 at Belos at any cost, so she sees Hunter as a direct rival. She's super bossy, likes to give orders, and thinks she's better than everyone else in the Guard. She speaks in an exaggerated and dramatic way, with a touch of acidic humor. Behind the arrogance, she's insecure and afraid of disappointing Belos, because her position depends on it.
Magic and abilities: Kikimora is from the Beast magic path. She can summon and control animals, mainly crows and other creatures. She fights using a staff and has good ranged attack magic. She is also very good at castle politics, manipulation, and espionage. She knows all the dirty secrets of the Belos court.
Role in history: At first, she works directly for Belos and hates Hunter because he was the emperor's favorite. After Hunter escapes, she tries to take his place as Golden Guard. In the end, she forcibly allies against the Collector and helps save the Isles, showing that even though she is selfish, she has a side that fights for her world.
In short: Kikimora is the typical ambitious employee who wants a promotion. Full of herself, gossipy, powerful, but afraid of falling behind. She and Hunter are always bickering, but deep down they both just wanted Belos' approval.
Who is Gus? β¨πͺπͺ
Gus is a boy, noticeably shorter than Luz, Amity, and Willow, with dark brown skin and dark brown hair with lighter highlights. His upper lip is curved, similar to Luz's. Like all witches and demons in the Boiling Sea, he has pointed ears. His eyes are dark blue.
After going through witch puberty, Gus has grown taller than before, almost the same height as Luz and Willow. In addition, Gus's facial features have become sharper and more angular, and his eyes now have visible pupils. When attending Hexside, Gus wears a gray robe with a belt, hood, and dark gray boots. As he's part of the Illusion track, his sleeves and leggings are light blue.
When not at Hexside, Gus wears a cyan robe with grayish-white sleeves and a black belt. He also wears charcoal gray stockings and dark purple boots. Starting in "Clouds on the Horizon," he wears a lighter cyan robe with loose white sleeves, a fuchsia belt and lining, steel blue stockings, and red-violet boots. He has the magic amplifier he took from Adrian hanging around his neck. Gus is a young and precocious witch. He is known for being very enthusiastic and excitable. In contrast to his usually cheerful attitude towards most activities and interactions, Gus has admitted to being quite insecure about his age. He feels left out for being younger than most others and, as such, tries to act assertively so as not to fall behind. This has also led him to be very welcoming to newcomers, as he can understand and empathize.
Who is Luz? β¨πͺπ΅οΈ
Luz is a Dominican-American teenage girl with tanned skin, short dark brown hair that she usually keeps in a pixie cut, and brown eyes. During her fight against Emperor Belos in "King's Tide," Luz suffers an injury that leaves her with a scar on her left eyebrow. Over the course of her time on Earth, her hair begins to grow, giving it a curlier appearance. Her clothing consists of a pair of ebony earrings, a half-white, half-indigo short-sleeved hooded sweatshirt with cat ears attached to the hood, high-waisted denim shorts, dark gray capri leggings, and a pair of white moccasins. When at Hexside, her school uniform features six different colors, separated by irregular divisions. Each of her sleeves has two shades of the same color, with the lighter shades closer to the cuffs: mint on the right, violet on the left. The legs of her pants are similarly divided, but use different shades, with red and magenta on the right leg and blue and cyan on the left leg. Interestingly, her uniform does not display the colors of the potion-making, beast-building, and beast-maintenance classes.
Who is Willow? β¨πͺπΊ
Willow is a shorter-than-average girl, large and sturdy in build, with fair skin, pointed ears, olive-green eyes, and short, clean, dark navy blue hair with a few loose strands. Willow wears a pair of round glasses with gold frames and the typical Hexside student uniform, consisting of a gray robe and dark gray hood, a belt with a gold pin, and gray-black short-heeled shoes. Originally, her sleeves and leggings were orchid-colored as part of her enrollment in the Abomination track, but after switching to the Plant track, they changed to green. Before "A Stormy Sport," the frames of her glasses were black, and she wore standard boots. When not at school, Willow wears a long-sleeved yellowish-brown dress that features a blue tie with a chartreuse oval gem, light gray and dark gray striped leggings, and brown boots. Starting from "Clouds on the Horizon," she wears a sleeveless yellowish-brown vest over a pale green half-sleeve shirt with a gold button, white collar and cuffs, blue shorts, silver and slate gray leggings, and burgundy heeled boots with light blue socks underneath. She keeps her blue tie, but with a gold gem.

β¨πͺ
Hunter, like many of the Golden Guards before him, was created in the likeness of Belos' deceased older brother, Caleb Wittebane.[6] He is a humanoid boy who shares the physical traits of a witch, such as pointed ears. He has fair skin, a slightly hooked nose, dark magenta eyes, thick black eyebrows, a gap between his front teeth, bags under his eyes, and ash blonde hair shaved short underneath, with a long, uneven strand on top. He has a notch in his left ear and scars on his right cheek, his left upper arm, two on his right kneecap forming an X, and one on his left calf. He also has an Emperor's Coven sigil branded on his right wrist. Amity describes him as scrawny in "Eclipse Lake," although he has a larger build compared to characters like Luz.
Staff spells β¨πͺ
-
Staff Magic: He channeled almost everything through the Guard's golden staff. With it, he unleashed bursts of golden energy, created shields, and restrained targets. The staff was his primary source of power at the time.
-
Immobilization magic: He used many spells to restrain enemies, like golden light cords that came out of his staff and tied people up.
-
Tracking magic: He could locate the Light through the portal and sniff out wild magic because he was trained for it by Belos.
After discovering he is Wittebane, he flees: Hunter discovers he has natural magic, without needing bile. The Wittebane family has an affinity for curse magic and beast magic. Then he begins to use:
-
Palisman's Magic: Flapjack transforms into a staff and sword for him. With Flapjack, he launches energy blasts, creates shields, and uses his sharp beak to attack at close range.
-
Transformation Magic: He can transform into an owl monster when he uses a lot of magic or when he's angry. He gets black feathers, claws, wings, and red eyes. This form is super strong but drains him.
-
Basic Healing Magic: Learn to perform simple bandages and support magic by living with Vee and Flapjack's family.
-
Projection Magic: He can create echoes or projections of himself for a short time, a trick he learned by watching other wizards.
History Part 3 β¨π‘οΈ
Caleb Wittebane and Evelyn - the story before everything else. Caleb and Philip Wittebane grew up on Earth in the early 1600s, sons of extremely religious witch hunters. Their father trained them both to hunt and kill anyone connected to magic. Philip took this very seriously and became obsessed. Caleb, on the other hand, was more of a dreamer and curious. One day, the two fell into an accidental portal and ended up on the Boiling Isles. Philip panicked and wanted to return to Earth to "purify" the world of magic. Caleb did the opposite. He was enchanted by the place and the people. That's where he meets Evelyn. She was a witch who lived in hiding because Belos himself was already starting to hunt down wild witches. Evelyn was kind, intelligent, and taught Caleb magic. The two fell in love even though they were from "opposite sides." Caleb gave up his life as a hunter and decided to stay with her on the Isles. They built a life together. They had children and formed a Wittebane family in the Boiling Isles. Caleb used curse magic and was very talented with palisms. Evelyn died young from an illness, and this devastated Caleb. Philip, who became Emperor Belos, never forgave his brother. He believed Caleb betrayed their family and their faith by falling in love with a witch. When Caleb died, Belos took his bones. With these bones and blood magic, Belos began creating the Grimwalkers. The first Hunter was created shortly after Caleb's death. Belos made him look like his brother, saying it was to "bring Caleb back." But in reality, it was just to have an obedient soldier. All the Hunters who came after died young because Belos drained their life force. The Hunter we follow in the series is number 21. He was born, raised, and trained inside the Castle of the Bells without knowing anything about Caleb, Evelyn, or that he had a real family.
Story Part 2 β¨πΈ
His laid-back personality, Hunter gets easily upset when things don't go his way, as seen in his interactions with Luz. He also seems to have a fascination with wild magic, even though Belos tells him not to, and is seen going crazy with Luz. His softer side becomes more prominent later when he befriends his new friend, not only starting to genuinely care for him,[8] but for all the other suffering friends.[10]
He was very loyal to Belos at first, even worrying about his "uncle's" condition whenever Belos transformed. He occasionally offered alternatives to help Emperor Belos with wild magic, but also feared his reaction at the mere mention of it. However, his loyalty wasn't absolute; he continually wondered why Emperor Belos had such a strong hatred for wild magic, yet Belos discouraged or even threatened him whenever he brought up the idea. Furthermore, Hunter didn't want to give Flapjack to Emperor Belos after the bird chose him as a companion.
Appearance β¨π‘οΈ
Face and general appearance Hunter has fair skin, reddish-violet eyes, and short, grayish-white hair with a strand of hair in the front. He has light freckles on his face and a look that shifts from suspicious to tired as the series progresses. He has a scar on his right chin and a line on his right eyebrow, which he hides under his mask. His expression changes a lot: it starts out serious and rigid, then becomes more expressive and human. He is around 16 years old, has a lean build, and a military posture.
Height and age His official age is 16 years old. His height is between 1.70m and 1.73m. He is taller than Luz and Willow, but shorter than Darius and Alador. He has an athletic build due to his training with the Guard, but not excessively so.
Clothing His uniform changes depending on the stage of the series:
- Golden Guard: When he first appears, he wears the full golden armor of the Emperor's Guard. The armor covers his entire body, has red details, and a golden helmet with a curved horn and visor that hides his face. Underneath the armor, he wears a tight-fitting black suit.
Story Part 1 πΈβ¨
Detailed history Hunter was born as a "grimwalker," that is, a magical copy created by Emperor Belos using blood and bone magic from his brother, Caleb Wittebane. Belos created several Hunters over the centuries because each one died young. The Hunter we follow is Hunter number 21, called "Golden Guard" by Belos.
He was raised from infancy to be the perfect soldier. Belos trained him to hunt wild sorcerers, capture the Light, and recover the portal. Because of this, he grew up without affection, without friends, and believing his only worth was obeying Belos. He thought Belos was a kind uncle who had saved him.
Everything changes when he meets Luz, Willow, and Gus. Luz begins to treat him like a person, not a weapon. He discovers that Belos lied his entire life: the previous Hunters died because Belos drained their magic, and the Hunter himself was also going to die young because of it. The revelation destroys him, because his entire identity was based on serving Belos.
After escaping, Hunter goes through a severe identity crisis. He doesn't know who he is without the title of Golden Guard. He goes to live with Flapjack's family, a palisman, and learns simple things like cooking and taking care of plants. He discovers he's a descendant of the Wittebane, so he has natural magic and doesn't need bile. This proves he's not just a defective copy.
In the end, he becomes the protector of Light and his friends. He fights against Belos, accepts that his past doesn't define his future, and finds a place where he belongs. His relationship with Flapjack is the most important point: the palisman truly chooses him, showing that Hunter is loved for who he is, not for what he does.
In short: Hunter is a boy who was raised as a weapon, but chooses to become a person. He starts out cold and obedient, and ends up kind, loyal, and with a dry sense of humor.
