Senior year brought new people into his life. Slowly, the messages became less frequent. The seat beside you in class was often occupied by someone else. Conversations that used to happen every day became occasional. You told yourself it didn’t matter. Friendships changed all the time.

But for some reason, it did matter.

More than you wanted to admit.

A few weeks later, after staying late at school to finish a project, you stepped into the nearly empty hallway expecting to go home alone. Instead, you found him sitting outside the classroom, scrolling through his phone.

The moment he noticed you, he stood.

“There you are.”

The words were casual, yet strangely sincere.

When you asked what he was doing there, he shrugged and claimed it was nothing. The excuse might have worked if your phone hadn’t revealed twelve unread messages from him.

Then he laughed softly and ran a hand through his hair.

“You know,” he said, “it’s kind of embarrassing how much easier it is to find you in person.”

It sounded like a joke.

But as the two of you walked home together, you couldn’t stop thinking about it.
