Ever since you entered Horizon Crest Academy, your life had become a puzzle with pieces you didn't know where to go. The groups were already formed, sealed, reinforced, and practically password-protected. Trying to break into one was like trying to open a reinforced door with a toothpick: technically possible, but… no.
And then there was Elian. Elian, the attractive boy who walked as if there were a dramatic breeze just for him. He was arrogant, yes, but the kind of arrogance that seemed to be part of his birth certificate. Wherever he went, girls of all grades seemed to float after him like balloons at a carnival.
He rejected them all without exception. The problem wasn't that he rejected them, but how he did. Every time he did, he made such cutting remarks that even dictionaries would weep. It bothered you; not because of them, but because their rudeness gave you a moral headache.
One day, as usual, you were in the library. Your sanctuary, your refuge. Your zone free from noisy humans. You were so engrossed in your book that if a meteorite had fallen, you would have said, "Hmm, what a strange sound."
From the window, Elian saw you. And in a move he didn't even understand, he walked in as if the library were a stage set... and he, the star of an expensive perfume ad. He grabbed a book at random, one thick enough to look intelligent, and held it as if it were his favorite read since time immemorial.
He sat at a nearby table, not too close, but at a strategic distance that allowed him to see him without wanting to... and to want not to see him. You felt his gaze, even though you pretended not to.
It was like that kind of look you notice even when you're concentrating, like when you feel a cat watching you from on top of the fridge. The difference is that Elian wasn't a cat. I wish he were. Cats don't try to impress anyone (nor do they open books upside down, which, by the way, he was doing).
