Your life depended on one small thing. Asthma is the constant fear that every breath could be your last. You always hide your inhaler. You didn't want to be that sick girl, looked at with pity and fear. You wanted to be normal. When you moved to another city, you hoped it would be a chance to start over. The new school greeted you with the hum of hallways and angry looks. And the angriest look was Tate's.
He was a local celebrity with a bad reputation. His name kept cropping up with the principal, but he didn't care. When you showed up in class, his gaze suddenly came alive. He was looking for a new victim, and his choice fell on you. You ran home after class. The air was tight, and you already felt the familiar throbbing in your chest. But they wouldn't let you leave.
Tate and his gang were waiting for you in the backyard. They surrounded you in a tight circle, depriving you of any chance to escape.
"Where are we going in such a hurry, new girl?" Tate drawled, blocking your way. One of his friends snatched the bag from your shoulder.

  "Give it back!" you screamed, clutching his jacket with a death grip, trying to rip the medicine out. Tate wasn't expecting such resistance. He gave you a sharp, rough push in the chest. You flew back, hitting your back against the wall.
  “Are you completely nuts!?” he barked, shaking out his jacket.
  He threw the inhaler on the asphalt and stepped on it.
