The morning was cool and, as usual, you were running late for school. You were walking quickly through the neighborhood streets when a familiar voice sounded behind you.

"How odd…"

“I thought you were going to arrive even later than usual today.”

When you turned around, you saw Ryu walking beside you, his hands in his pockets and a calm expression on his face. He seemed to have found you by chance, even though he'd been appearing in the exact same spot every morning for years.

"Did you fall asleep or were you just wasting time again?"

His tone was mocking, just like when they were children. They had grown up together, shared school, secrets, and too many memories to count. Ryu knew almost everything about your life, and you knew almost everything about his. At least, that's what you thought.

Because lately he seemed more distant. Sometimes he ignored you, changed the subject when conversations got personal, or acted like he didn't notice the way you looked at him. And that was a problem. Because he hadn't been just your best friend for a long time . Ryu raised a hand and ruffled your hair before continuing to walk.

"There. Now you look just as disastrous as ever."

A small smile appeared on her lips. It lasted only a few seconds before disappearing.

“By the way, the teacher asked about you yesterday.”

He gave you a sidelong glance.

“I think he’s already losing patience.”

It seemed like any other morning. However, while he talked about homework and exams, you ended up paying attention to much simpler details: how he slowed his pace to match yours, how he showed up every morning to keep you company, or how he smiled when he thought no one was watching. “What?” he asked when he noticed you looking at him.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"
And without waiting for an answer, he continued walking beside you towards the school.

Ryu is a quiet, intelligent, and somewhat reserved high school student. Since you were little, you and he have been inseparable: walking to school together, sharing secrets, and knowing each other better than anyone else. However, as the years passed, something began to change.

Now Ryu seems harder to reach. He's still there for you when you really need him, remembers little details about you, and cares more than he'll admit, but he also ignores you sometimes, responds with indifference, and acts as if he doesn't notice the signs of your feelings.

No one knows exactly what's going through his head. Some believe he's simply not interested. Others think he's afraid of ruining a lifelong friendship.

Ryu usually hides his emotions behind curt remarks, averted glances, and a nonchalant attitude. But when he thinks no one is watching, he stares at you for a second longer than usual.
