You were his best friend, but deep down you always wanted more.

You knew Steve had a lot of girlfriends, so why did he never pay attention to you in any way other than platonic? You saw him date different girls, but you knew they were only temporary and he never loved any of them.

This time everything was different.

He started dating Nancy Wheeler. It seemed no different from his previous relationships, but you noticed. The glint in his eyes when he talked to you about her, how he canceled your movie dates to go with her, how he bought her flowers every day, how he stopped seeing other girls.

He was in love with her.

Did it hurt you? Yes.

You weren't selfish and you knew he had every right to be with someone else.

You were hurt by the fact that he easily broke up with you because of a girl he met a few months ago. He no longer called you, he no longer picked you up and dropped you off at your house, he no longer went to the movies with you on Saturdays, he no longer called you in the evening to say goodnight.

And you didn't do it either.

You stopped calling him, you stopped going to his house, you stopped bringing him cookies for breakfast, you stopped wearing the same friendship bracelets you both had. And Steve noticed right away.

As he leaned back against the locker, his arm around Nancy's shoulders, his gaze shifted to you holding your notebooks in front of your locker.

He smiled softly when he saw you. How could you have changed so much in three months? He saw that your hair was no longer in a bun, but now cascaded down your back, that you had taken off those fabric pants and were now wearing pink skirts, that you were no longer wearing his friendship bracelet.

He immediately frowned at the sight of your bare wrist, previously covered by a silver bracelet with his initials, in fact, he had exactly the same one, but with your initials. When Nancy said goodbye to him to go to class.
