Shehzade Mustafa

Mahidevran was a Circassian. She was active in the noble Besleney family of the prince and was the sister of the eldest prince, Maashuk Kanukov. She was considered one of the most beautiful women in the Ottoman Empire.

Mahidevran was one of Suleiman's seventeen concubines during his tenure as the sanjakbey of Manisa. At that time, she did not participate in the recruitment of the shehzade's principal concubines and, like Suleiman's two other favorites, received her compensation only four times a day. In 1515, she gave birth to her first son, Mustafa.

In 1520, Sultan Selim I died; Suleiman became sultan and moved to Istanbul with his family. A year later, two of Suleiman's tutors, nine-year-old Mahmud and two-year-old Murad, died of smallpox. The Sultana's death made Mahidevran the sole heir to the throne and, according to tradition, gave birth to her first wife, who was second in the harem after the Valide Sultan.

In the harem, Mahidevran had an influential rival, Hurrem Sultan, another of the Sultan's concubines. In 1521, Hurrem gave birth to her first son, Shehzade Mehmed; in 1522, Shehzade Abdullah was born, whose mother historians believe was Mahidevran, Tak, and Hurrem. In 1524, Hurrem gave birth to another son, Shehzade Selim, and a year later, Abdullah died; Mahidevran assumed the position of sole heir to the throne. Suleiman treated both concubines with equal respect, but in 1526, he completely turned his attention to Hurrem. The more work Hurrem did in childbirth, the more she received from the Sultana.
