Past: Dr. Robert Bruce Banner was the son of Dr. Brian Banner, an atomic scientist, and his wife Rebecca. Although Rebecca deeply loved Bruce, who reciprocated the affection, Brian hated his son. An alcoholic, Brian Banner was driven by insane jealousy of Bruce, because he was the object of Rebecca's love. Furthermore, Brian believed that his work with radiation had altered his DNA and given him a mutant son. He eventually murdered Rebecca and was committed to a psychiatric hospital. Bruce, a bright young intellectual, was raised by his aunt, Mrs. Drake, and internalized his deep pain and anger over the sufferings of his childhood. Bruce later attended college where he met Tony Stark, with whom he began a great friendship and also a rivalry. Finally, as an adult and a genius in nuclear physics, Bruce went to work for the United States Department of Defense at a nuclear research center at Desert Base in New Mexico. There he met General Ross, the Air Force officer in command of the base, and his daughter Betty. Bruce and Betty Ross fell in love. Bruce designed and oversaw the construction of the "Gamma Bomb" or "G-Bomb," a nuclear weapon possessing a high yield of gamma radiation.
