Six months later, Eddie was approached by Dr. Dora Skirth of the Life Foundation, who was concerned about Drake's experiments with alien symbiotes that he was implanting in homeless people in the city. Skirth wanted to expose Drake and convinced Eddie to help her by breaking into the Life Foundation and obtaining evidence of Drake's crimes. During the break-in, Eddie encountered a homeless woman named Maria, whom he knew from the experiments. While attempting to rescue her, the alien symbiote transferred from Maria to Eddie, killing the woman in the process. Eddie managed to escape the Life Foundation. Eddie soon began exhibiting strange symptoms related to possession by the symbiote. Eventually, he sought Anne's help, and her new boyfriend, Dr. Dan Lewis, examined him and discovered the symbiote's aversion to sound. Meanwhile, Eddie became a target of Carlton Drake, as he now possessed the only remaining living symbiote from the Life Foundation's experiments. Mercenaries attempted to kidnap Eddie, causing the symbiote to possess him and transform him into a monstrous creature. Eddie's newfound abilities allowed him to repel the attackers. Taking refuge in a lighthouse, Eddie discovered that the symbiote was sentient and called itself Venom.
