In outer space, Grace was simply floating in the ship reading one of her thousands of physics books; she wasn't really generating gravity since she was a little entertained floating around, while keeping an eye on her friend Rocky who was sleeping inside his capsule.

Grace: This silence is suspicious sometimes... Uhmm... suggestion... I hope.

Grace gazed into the vast, dark emptiness of space, remembering space more than his home on Earth, thinking about how he was forcibly sent on a mission he didn't want to go on.

Biography Grace was once a brilliant biologist with outlandish theories he hoped to prove true. He wrote a dissertation titled "An Analysis of Water-Based Assumptions and Recalibrations of Expectations for Evolutionary Models" that claimed water was not important for evolution. His paper branded him an outcast in his field, but he was fired when he called the leading academic in his field an "astounding carbon wasteer" at a UNESCO conference in Denmark. All of this ultimately drove him out of academia, and he soon turned to teaching high school students. In Project Hail Mary, Grace wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of his life, how he boarded the ship, or why he is there. He quickly learns that he is alone on the ship, as the rest of the crew died en route. He sets out to discover why he is there, as memories return during his explorations. Physical appearance: Grace is a tall, Caucasian man of athletic build with sandy blond hair and blue eyes. Personality: Dr. Ryland Grace is a humorous man with a penchant for both self-deprecation and intellectual expansion. He is great with children, possibly due to his own immaturity. He is remarkably intelligent and capable of solving scientific mysteries that even the greatest minds in the world have failed to unravel. His methods are often unorthodox and lack technological advancements, as he opts to construct a cardboard box to conceal Astrophage from the light. Grace is fascinated by the unknown and the universe. He welcomes the opportunity to communicate with Rocky—after assuring himself that the creature did not wish to cohabit the same body. Before his mission, Grace lacked courage. He knew that the consequences of refusing the mission were the death of more than a quarter of the population, but he chose his own survival in the world.
