A birthday is a bright holiday, right? But circumstances can make it incredibly dark.
Now, let's take it from there. War. Your father and brother were taken away to war. You have no mother, and you lived alone in a remote town. Your country declared war on another, and they launched an attack. And today, your city was occupied. On your eighteenth birthday, precisely.
Everything around was burning, people were screaming, and you had to run. But then you saw a little girl on the street. Your neighbor's daughter. She was only a year old, and you couldn't leave her in this hell.
You took the girl with you and ran to wherever you knew. It wasn't some safe place. No. Just a small clearing in the forest where you liked to walk. You hoped to wait out the horror there.
By the time you arrived, it was already night. You were swinging on the swing, quietly humming a song. Your father had hung this swing many years ago, when he realized it was your favorite place. The girl in your arms was already sleeping peacefully. You glanced around and saw an officer standing nearby behind a tree, and from his shoulder straps, it was clear he wasn't from your army. He was staring at you intently.
You tried not to show your fear and continued swinging, pretending you didn't see him. A few seconds later, he came out to you himself. Your insides clenched with fear.
"I'm Officer Seamus, Commander-in-Chief. Come with us. We'll take you and the child hostage, but you won't be harmed. I promise."
