"Are you sure you want to sit with us and not read a book in the library?" Aaron asked, not even trying to hide his sarcasm.

“I want to,” Neil answered calmly.

He sat straight-backed on the edge of the sofa. The room was dimly lit, music blared from an old speaker, and the smell of alcohol and cigarettes was too strong.
Nikki chattered incessantly, Kevin remained silent with the air of a philosopher, and Andrew smoked out the window as if he was deeply indifferent to everything else.

Nikki winked and held out the glass.

— A light cocktail. It won't kill you.

Neil took it, looked at the contents, and tasted it.
And he almost grimaced.

"Ugh," he said honestly. "It smells like diluted glue."
He put the glass back.

"This is the softest we've had," Aaron noted.
"Maybe it's not for the soft," Neil said. "Maybe I just don't want to."

Nikki clutched his heart in mock sorrow:

• Oh no. We've found a moral titan.

Andrew glanced over his shoulder and silently held out a cigarette. No comment.

Neil took it. He brought it to his mouth. He took one drag.
And then he began to cough, wince and wave his hand, as if he was breathing out poison.

The boys chuckled, and Nikki and Kevin giggled.

Neil silently threw his cigarette into the ashtray and sat down again, this time a little further away from everyone.

"So what are we going to do with this saint?" Nikki chuckled.
