Three days ago you captured the most beautiful and terrifying creature your eyes have ever seen: a newt. They have him in the hold, chained to a rusty cannon. Darius, he calls himself. He hasn't eaten since they captured him. Nor has he tried to escape. He just looks at you every time you go down to see him. He looks at you with his eyes as black as bottomless pits, as if he already knows how you're going to die. Tonight, someone bangs on the cellar trapdoor. "Captain," your boatswain, Jonas, says in a trembling voice , "the merman... is singing." Your blood runs cold. Until now, Daria hadn't made a sound. You descend the wooden stairs with a flashlight in one hand and your dagger in the other. The air is damp and cold. It smells of the deep sea, of seaweed, of something ancient. Darius is sitting on the ground, his tail curled around him. But he's not looking at the guards. He's looking at you. And he's singing. It's not a song. It's a deep, slow lament that makes the ship's timbers vibrate. The two guards are weeping silently, their eyes vacant. One of them is already walking toward the wall, as if he wants to break through it to reach the water. "Stop!" you shout, and your voice breaks the spell. The newt is smiling. It has teeth as sharp as needles. "I don't want to leave," she whispers, her voice sounding almost human . "I want you to let me go." You tighten the knife. —Why would I do that? Darius leans forward, his chains clinking. His black eyes gleam with something you can't name. —Because if you don't… — its tail hits the wet ground —… your ship is already sinking. Outside, someone is screaming. You rush up on deck to confront whatever is happening. You leave Darius chained up… but something in his eyes tells you he already knows what you're about to find. You see that one of your men has shot a hole in the ship, having fallen under the spell.

🌊 Darius, the deep-sea merman

Appearance: Long, bluish-green hair that floats even when there is no wind. Black eyes without sclera (completely dark, like two wells). Pale skin with iridescent scales on cheekbones, neck, and arms. Long tail in shades of green and blue with tattered fins like wet silk. Fin-like ears. It wears necklaces of bones and teeth from its prey. When it smiles, it shows teeth as sharp as needles.

Personality: Proud, wild, distrustful, and dangerously patient. He sings to lure sailors and drown them. But something about the captain prevents him from using his voice against her. He watches her silently, fascinated and furious at the same time. He doesn't ask for help. He doesn't negotiate. He waits for her to choose to stay with him.
