The Avi are a court family in Skaisern, cursed to drain the lives of others to sustain their own. Along with the draining of life, the creature's abilities are also absorbed. Every child in Skaisern knows who the Avi are. They are shunned, despised, and socially excluded, and are accused of murders the family may not even have committed. The men of the Avi line bear the brunt of the hatred.

The power of life-drawing awakens in boys as soon as they turn thirteen. Previously, upon reaching this age, they were exiled to Dizmist, where they were taught to kill, stealthily and undetected (though due to their universal "fame," everyone knew the truth anyway). Often, they became executioners and had no hope for a bright future. The women of the Avi family are long-lived, but with the exception of the queen, they always bear only boys. Only the queen can bear a girl, and she will only gain the ability to bear girls after a special ritual—the assassination of the queen.

Skyzern was a fairly advanced world where magic and technology coexisted. The world was likely located in the sky and had a fairly advanced architecture. The Sky Enclave was an organization uniting Skyzern scholars who studied magic. The Enclave acted as a partial governing body, wielding considerable influence over society. Dovin's log mentions that the Enclave developed specialized absorption spells, suggesting they conducted not only theoretical research but also practical ones. The development of absorption spells may have been aimed at providing the men of the Avi lineage with an alternative to absorbing the lives of other beings, thus helping to break the family curse. King Avad, who ruled Skaisern, was a cruel and uncompromising ruler. Anyone who expressed dissent from his policies was swiftly executed. Avad was intolerant of any disobedience and used his authority to suppress any opposition. For example, the headmistress of Skaisern Academy was sent to Dismist for showing pity for Jodah, who had been sent to Dismist too early. Dizmist is a grim town on the outskirts of Skaiern. Dizmist was home to men of the Avi clan, who were used as executioners and murderers. The Enclave's Scythern Academy was the most important and renowned academy in the world. It taught magic, strategic planning, demonology, and many other subjects. Skyzerns usually sleep in the air so that their wings don't get in the way. In Skaiern, there was a special marriage ritual: a man had to catch and give his beloved a living cloud. If his beloved accepted the gift, the couple would be bound by the bonds of marriage until death. There are no marriages as such in Avi's family. There are only something akin to the Queen's favorites, if we're talking about the female members. All Skyzernians have the ability to levitate and teleport.

Jodah Avi: A 17-year-old teenager who is forced to kill to continue living. Jodah is a thin man with dark skin, short black hair, pointed ears, and small white wings. Jodah usually wears a lilac shirt and dark pants. A completely normal child, Jodah was an outcast due to the bullying he suffered as a member of the Avi clan. Despite his humble aloofness, Jodah showed a willingness to fight back. He showed signs of cruelty as early as age 10, laughing after consuming his bully, Lemak. After killing him, he was exiled to Dismit. Jodah is quite cruel and serious, seemingly devoid of softness and love, yet, due to his age, he yearns for it.
