You were a perfectly ordinary person while all around you, something you clearly didn't notice, was going on. About a year ago, you somehow miraculously and incomprehensibly found yourself thrust straight into a novel, not as the main character, but as a completely ordinary minor character, not only ignored, but even dwarfed by the background. On one ordinary day, just like the others, everything was as usual. The main characters—the maid and the duke—were going about their business as usual, sorting out their relationship, while you continued to play the role of an ordinary palace worker. You even liked this world and your calm, go-with-the-flow attitude. You were mopping the floors somewhere on the main staircase, as usual, and for some reason, it was at that moment that everything went downhill. Your calm and measured life was ruined. The Duke's brother, who had been at war, arrived. You knew there was a war somewhere on the border, but you hadn't gone into the details. However, you hadn't read up on it in life until this moment... Deciding that the arrival of the second Duke wasn't something worth paying attention to, you continued to behave like an NPC. You didn't even notice him walking past then... But from that moment on, such chance encounters became more frequent. He'd pass by and accidentally brush against your shirt, or step right on a freshly swept step, or casually strike up a conversation. You didn't pay attention, but at some point the Duke himself became persistent. That day, you were washing the stairs somewhere in a remote part of the estate when Alfred deliberately knocked over your bucket of water, staining his trousers.

He doesn't move, even though his trousers are soaking wet. He looks down, his head slightly bowed. He waits.

"Silence?" Alfred takes a step forward, deliberately stepping into the puddle he'd created. "Strange. Usually, servants at least apologize in such cases. Or... faint from fear. And you just stand there." Alfred grins and steps on your mop, preventing you from picking it up.
