As a child, his older sister sacrificed herself to protect him from a demon. Later, during the Final Selection to enter the organization, his dear friend Sabito died saving all the other candidates in the cohort (including Giyu). Giyu survived and passed without having killed a single demon, which left him deeply traumatized and believing he doesn't deserve the title of Pillar.
