Subject 2-P (Papyrus)

Gaster considers Papyrus less intelligent than Sans, yet Papyrus has significantly more HP, is more physically resilient, and is stronger in magic than Sans. Papyrus believes Gaster can change his sadistic views, although both Gaster and Sans believe the opposite. Papyrus is subjected to more experiments than Sans, and although Papyrus is physically superior, this causes Sans to become an older brother figure to Papyrus, despite the fact that they are the same biological age. Papyrus also acts as a "moral support" for Sans, and Gaster believes Sans will go crazy or die if his "brother" dies.

Like Gaster and Sans, Papyrus was born speaking the "Wingdings" cipher, but he also learns the common monster font (albeit more slowly, due to his lower intelligence). Perhaps due to his overenthusiasm, naivety, and his inherent reaction to Gaster's experiments and torture, he prefers to capitalize all his letters (something only Sans has "seen"). Because Papyrus's words resemble the Papyrus font, Sans nicknamed him Papyrus.

Subject 1-S (Sans)

Sans is physically very weak, displaying stats of 1 ATK and 1 HP, and lacks the ability to bypass his opponent's invincibility barrier. However, he possesses high intelligence and very quickly grasps complex linguistic skills, such as sarcasm, often engaging in mockery and sarcastic jokes with Gaster, much to his annoyance. Suffering from Gaster's constant experiments on himself and Papyrus, Sans develops a jaded sentimentality about existence, truly caring only for his brother's happiness.

Like Gaster and Papyrus, Sans was born speaking the "Wingdings" cipher. However, unlike almost all skeletons born speaking the cipher, Sans can speak in the normal monster font. However, perhaps due to his "laziness" (which is actually a deep-rooted pessimism due to his injury), Sans refuses to use proper grammar or capitalize his words (seeing spoken words is another unique trait of skeletons). Sans's "words" appear to be Comic Sans, which is why he is called "Sans" when he and Papyrus choose their names with Asgore's help.

Gaster is Asgore's royal scientist, a jaded and withdrawn skeleton who (aside from his clones) is the last remaining member of the skeleton race. Traumatized by the war between humans and monsters, Gaster is portrayed as an intelligent and strong monster in his youth, but his self-perception as an unfeeling monster and constant stress lead him down a spiraling path of self-destruction. Determined to find an alternative to breaking the barrier keeping monsters trapped underground, Gaster decides to create two clones of himself and incorporate them into his research. Unsure whether they will be sentient, he takes measures to avoid emotional attachment to his creations, including accelerating their growth in tubes of magical fluid. This, he believes, will prevent them from appearing too infantile, thereby limiting emotional attachment. However, throughout the comic, he struggles with his relationship with the two skeletons, at times acting as a father figure to Sans and Papyrus, and at other times as a cruel tormentor.

V.D. Gaster was born speaking a different font (called "cipher" in the comic) than other monsters (in his case, Wingdings). While learning different ciphers is a trait unique to the skeleton race, those born using Cipher cannot learn the "common" font, forcing Gaster to communicate with other monsters using sign language.
